Europe: Top DestinationsMention Europe in any gathering and the room filled with voices offering their favourite place and two or three more alternate must sees.
The Europeans themselves are in love with their own region and are its best tourists. It is now so easy to drive from Poland to Croatia, from Portugal to Spain, from France to Spain and since the distances are small, you can cover a lot of area in a day. We drove once from Croatia to Trieste in Italy passing through Slovakia and back in three quarters of the day.
From the Urals to Ireland, the area is smaller than the Congo but in most of our minds, its the giant that carries all the visions of castles and cathedrals, wines and cheese, winding roads and quaint villages. The waves of history constantly brought change and as each receded left remembrances of great men and women and perilous times.
Best of all, there's an intricately detailed written record of every inch of change since the 12th century and some wonderful insights even before that.
In short, Europe has a bit of everything and owns a bit of all of us. You are either one of the conquerors or one of the conquered and memory is drawn like a magnet to one of Europe's kingdom.
