Theatre Memorabilia: Smart Gifts for Every Occasion
If you're one of those for whom theatre is a passion and your months are marked by the totally engaging performances you've been a part of, then theatre memorabilia is a twelve month Christmas in your home.
Live theatre. Not the agony of your six year old forgetting her lines but the joy of the world's greatest artist digging deep to find a character, a gesture, an expression, an eyebrow that will communicate a feeling or an insight.
Perhaps, it's the riotous live music of Hair or Maria or Tommy or the latest hit, Hamilton. Whatever it is, these memorabilia evoke memories of good and fun times in the past that often leave us with a song in our heart and a smile on our faces.
It's the posters of the stars of yesteryears perfectly reproduced to draw you into the theatre. It's photographs of the sets, of the stages, of the audiences and the costumes. It's an empty jar of cold cream used by Maggie Smith or a half faced mask worn by Colm Wilkinson. It can be an album cover from the soundtrack of the Phantom. Or even an orchestra seat from a long lost but well loved theatre.
Eventually, most costumes come on the market with their provenance attached. Wigs and swords and top hats worn by the heroes of the stage and the heroines of our hearts can be wonderfully decorative.
Theatre is visual but it also demands the imagination of the audience. So, let your theatre lovers use their imagination to create a memorabilia corner in their house. Get them started with a theatre memory piece from one of their favourites.
Choices are not wanting in various areas of interest. From posters, to songs, to old programs, books, records, costumes and more than my thoughts can give me now. If their interest is in music, get them a record of Hair, Phantom of the Opera or Evita. By the way, if you can believe it, old record players are now again in vogue to younger people.
Or, here's for those who really are much younger. Give them this album and start them collecting their tickets. They can catalogue the shows they have enjoyed. This will not cost them much as they really are going to those shows anyway.
Where to Buy Theatre Memorabilia
You will be surprised to find that there are loyal followers who travel all over the world in search of rare and interesting memorabilia. I was surprised to find tips in Trip Advisor of where to get these in some corners of Vienna or London or New York.
Ebay and Amazon, of course, have thousands but just make sure the source can be relied on. One takes the risk. There are collectors who sometimes unload some items. Estate sales may be one of your best bets for valuable memorabilia.
Here's the most searched for and the most valued. If you're lucky enough or maybe more wealthy and can get hold of one of these, your gift recipient will truly be in heaven especially when it happens to be in one of his top favourites.
You can also line up for autograph shows and other events where theatre celebrities autograph memorabilia. Make sure you bring your best memorabilia and some extras, too.
Here are some of the theatre shows that have sparked our imagination and have engaged many of us in its music, costumes and drama. We have our top favourites of the ones we have been privileged to see.
Some of us may have been lucky to have kept programs, tickets, photos and posters bought during the show. Even luckier are those who patiently lined up for autographs.

For me, this would be one of the gifts I would always treasure. It speaks so much of history and culture.
