Have you ever been to a place and be surprised by the celebration going on? Those who have been in this experience understand how much more meaningful this is. Giggly teens throwing water at us in Bangkok during the Thai New year but fist asking permission as we are much older and the respect for older people in that country is amazing.
Once, in Phuket during Loy Krathong, our hotel prepared as well a boat with beautiful flowers and offerings for us to float in the ocean. And everywhere we go in, we were given another one to float to the ocean. So much of our sorrows floated away and our joys multiplied.
We usually take a flight out of Cambodia each time there is a holiday but one year we just were not able to make the arrangement and we ended up in Cambodia for the water festival. We were astounded as we have never seen anything like it. In fact, this year we made sure we were here again for that celebration and tourists who were here for the celebration were also wondering why they have never heard of this. Older tourists got through the major crowd just to be at the water front to view the closing ceremonies as it was very exciting.
So, in your next trip, plan ahead. Read about the local festivals and plan to be there at those times. |
